IN THIS ISSUE
It is most definitely Spring here in Elim and life on the southernmost
tip of Africa is Good! (Just look at the sunset.)
I
think this may be one of my favourite times of the year. Not only is it
Spring, but the daunting task of pruning and preparing for the next
harvest is done, and the growth cycle of the vines begins.
The
bud bursts have started and they’re a bit uneven due to a bit of a cold
snap at the end of September; but we’ll compensate for this with
suckering to ensure you get delectable wines.

Speaking of delectable wine…
The Naked Truth about The Weather Girl
The Weather Girl is our 70% Sauvignon Blanc / 30% Semillon, Bordeaux style blend.
2008
was the maiden vintage and received a breathtaking 5 stars in the 2010
Platter Guide!!! (As I said – life at The Berrio is Good!)
The naked truth is…
The Semillon’s from Elim have done really well this year.
The
Semillon’s from Elim have done really well this year. People are
talking about the outstanding Sauvignon Blanc’s from the Elim Ward –
well watch out for the Semillon!
In
fact keep an eye on ALL wine from Elim. We’re proving to be a versatile
wine ward with our fruit producing unique quality wines that even
astound us winemakers.
Find out what’s waiting in the wings at The Berrio.
Angry Pasta
Now while we think a good wine goes with any food (or no food) here’s a recipe from Franchen that will pair very nicely with The Berrio Cabernet Sauvignon - Arrabiata Pasta aka Angry Pasta.
It’s not for the feint hearted but is quick and easy and makes you anything but angry when accompanied by our Cab.
A Brisk Wind in The Berrio’s Sails
Winter
has been busy for The Berrio. We’ve travelled around the country to
different wine shows. We had an excellent time at the Mercury Wine Week
in Durban and are thrilled with the reception the people of Natal gave
The Berrio wines.
We also heard the most unusual description of our wines at the Hermanus Wine and Food Fair.
Family
life is busy too. Francia performed in a ballet that culminated in a
performance at Nico Malan in Cape Town, Zabeth is doing well with her
violin and Catherine has started swimming lessons.
Franchen and I spent a week doing one of our most favourite things in
the world – cruising on Harley Davidson’s up the west coast into the
Karoo to the Paternoster Harley Davidson Rally. This never fails as a catalyst for inspiration!
Now it’s time to nurture the land. Earth and soil is life. If you look
after it – it looks after you. And I have some organic Guano fertilizer
that I know this precious land of ours is going to love!
Until next time. Best wishes from The Berrio.
Francis, Franchen and the girls.
PS Don’t forget to come and visit us and taste The Berrio wines in our new tasting room. The Overberg is particularly beautiful at the moment so it’s well worth the drive!
